On the occasion of Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23), Thua Thien-Hue Province organized three major events, including receiving the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Documentary Heritage Certificate for “The Nine Dynastic Urns in the Hue Royal Palace,” announcing the completion of preserving and restoring the Thai Hoa Palace and breaking ground on the project of restoring the Can Chanh Palace.

In November 2021, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center started to restore Thai Hoa Palace with a total cost of VND128 billion. After three years, the renovated Thai Hoa Palace is open to visitors. In addition, the province will restore the overall interior and exterior architecture and landscape of Can Chanh Palace which is close to the original version. It costs nearly VND200 billion to restore the palace within four years.

These are the two most important projects in Hue Imperial City. While Thai Hoa Palace is where the kings held their courts, Can Chanh Palace is where the kings worked.

Also on November 23, Thua Thien-Hue Province organized the reception of the UNESCO Documentary Heritage Certificate for “The Nine Dynastic Urns in the Hue Royal Palace”.

On May 8, 2024, at the 10th Session of the Memory of the World Program for the Asia-Pacific region held in Mongolia, “The Nine Dynastic Urns in the Hue Royal Palace” were officially listed in the UNESCO Documentary Heritage List of Asia-Pacific region. The nine urns were cast in 1835 and completed in 1837 under the reign of King Minh Mang. This is considered a vivid encyclopedia of Vietnam at that time and was recognized as a national treasure by the Prime Minister in 2012.

“Thua Thien Hue Province is committed to continuing to synchronously and effectively implement the International Programs and Action Plans and the Vietnamese Government on preserving and promoting the value of cultural heritage; with specific solutions, both immediate and long-term, to create new vitality for the heritage; so that the heritage will last forever, increasingly spreading to serve the socio-economic development of the locality”, said Thua Thien-Hue Province People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Phuong.

Jonathan Wallace Baker, Head of UNESCO Representative Office in Vietnam, presented the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Documentary Heritage Certificate for “The Nine Dynastic Urns in the Hue Royal Palace.”

Hue is honored to be the first locality in Vietnam to have a heritage recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage (Complex of Hue Monuments, 1993) and is also the place that owns the first intangible heritage of Vietnam to be included in the list of representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity (Hue Royal Court Music, 2003). Up to now, Thua Thien-Hue is the locality with the largest number of world heritages sites in Vietnam. This is a clear demonstration of the richness and diversity of the cultural heritage system with global value in the land of the former imperial capital.
