Lao Cai to build VND7 trillion Sapa Airport

HCMC – The Prime Minister on October 21 approved a plan to build an airport in Sapa in the northern upland province of Lao Cai through a public-private partnership with a total investment of over VND6,948 billion (US$305 million).

According to the plan, the airport will be built on an area of 371 hectares in Cam Con Commune, Bao Yen District, Lao Cai Province. The first phase of the project will cover 295.2 hectares, while the second phase will need an additional 75.8 hectares.

In the first phase, which starts from 2021, the Sapa Airport will meet the 4C standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization and be capable of receiving 1.5 million passengers a year.

In the second phase, after 2028, the airport’s capacity will be doubled to three million passengers a year.

The project requires an investment of VND6,948 billion, including VND4,183 billion for the first phase and VND2,765 billion for the second phase.

The Government will fund VND2,730 billion for site clearance, resettlement and construction of infrastructure, while VND4,218 billion will come from private investors.

Lao Cai Province will be fully responsible for information and data in the pre-feasibility study, the selection of investors, and the quality, efficiency and progress of the project.
