Lawmaker Le Thanh Van faces prosecution

HCMC – The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee has approved the prosecution and detention of lawmaker Le Thanh Van, a permanent member of the NA Finance and Budget Committee and an NA deputy of Ca Mau Province.

The approval is provided in a resolution adopted by the NA Standing Committee today, July 10. Authorities can now file charges against and detain Van, search his residence and workplace, and suspend his official duties as a lawmaker.

Resolution 1090/NQ-UBTVQH15 follows a recommendation from the chief prosecutor of the Supreme People’s Procuracy.

Van is a 60-year-old native of Thanh Hoa Province. He holds a doctorate in law and has served in the NA for three terms. He represented Haiphong City in the 13th term and Ca Mau Province in the 14th and 15th terms.

Van has held various positions within the NA, including roles in the Committee for NA Deputies’ Affairs, the Institute for Legislative Studies at the NA, and the NA Finance and Budget Committee.

From March 2014 to December 2015, he served as deputy secretary of the Hai Duong Province Party Committee before returning to the NA Finance and Budget Committee.

What he is accused of is still unknown.
