HCMC – Legislative officials from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam met on October 18 to discuss the development triangle area (DTA).

The discussion served as a precursor to the first trilateral National Assembly summit, slated for December 2023.

The agenda included talks on foreign relations, economy and national security, aiming to strengthen legislative roles in regional cooperation and highlighting a commitment to mutual growth and stability in the DTA region.

Two-way trade between Vietnam and Laos had reached US$1.19 billion in the year to September 2023, down 1.96% year-over-year. Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Cambodia in the period dropped 23% to US$6.5 billion.

Economic data showed Vietnam’s DTA region achieved an 8.62% growth rate in 2022. Agriculture, industry, and services sectors were major contributors to this growth, contributing 29.4%, 27.4%. and 38.7%, respectively.

Established in 1999, the DTA has proven its merit as an effective mechanism connecting these neighboring countries, contributing to regional security, political stability, economic and social development, including hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
