HCMC – The Lo Te-Rach Soi road project, which will connect Can Tho City with Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta, will be opened to traffic on January 12, according to the Cuu Long Corporation for Investment Development and Project Management of Infrastructure, or Cuu Long CIPM.

The construction of the 51-kilometer-long road began in 2016, with the Transport Ministry being the project’s developer and Cuu Long CIPM the management unit.

The project cost over VND6.35 trillion, which came from the official development assistance provided by South Korea and Vietnam’s reciprocal capital. It starts in Vinh Thanh District of Can Tho City and ends in Chau Thanh District of Kien Giang Province.

Only cars are allowed to travel on this four-lane road, with a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour, while motorcycles are banned from entering it.

Once the road is operational, the time needed to travel from Can Tho to Kien Giang will be reduced to 50 minutes from 90 minutes.

The project, being put into operation at the start of the new year, has an important meaning for the delta, as it will enable transport service providers to map out plans for carrying passengers and goods during the upcoming Lunar New Year as well as offer local residents in the provinces of An Giang and Kien Giang convenience while traveling during the holiday, said the ministry.

In the long run, the road will connect with the eastern part of the delta, forming a second route running parallel with National Highway 1 and helping promote the socioeconomic growth of localities through which the road passes.
