HCMC – The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee has passed a resolution approving the police detention of Duong Van Thai, a NA deputy and Party secretary of Bac Giang Province.
NA Secretary General Bui Van Cuong announced yesterday evening, May 1, that the resolution concerning the detention, prosecution, and search of residence and workplace against Cuong had been issued on April 26, said local media reports.
According to the resolution, Thai’s duties and powers as a deputy of the 15th NA for the 2021-2026 term is suspended from the date of the prosecution decision being made against him.
The National Assembly Organization Law stipulates that police are not allowed to arrest, detain, prosecute, or search the residences and workplaces of NA deputies without the consent of the National Assembly or its Standing Committee.
The decision to request arrest, detention, prosecution, or search of the residences and workplaces of NA deputies falls under the jurisdiction of the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy.
On April 15, police temporarily detained Nguyen Duy Hung, chairman of Thuan An Group JSC, along with five others on alleged charges of serious violations of bidding regulations causing serious consequences and giving or accepting bribes.
Hoang The Du, Nguyen Van Thao, and Dam Van Cuong as officials of the Management Board of Traffic Project Construction Investment in Bac Giang Province were also arrested for alleged charges of violating bidding regulations and taking bribes.
Expanding the investigation into the case, the Ministry of Public Security on April 22 initiated prosecution and temporarily detained Pham Thai Ha, assistant to the NA Chairman, on alleged charges of abusing power and authority to influence others for personal gains.
