Over 130,000 tons of rice proposed for 8.6 million people

HCMC – The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has written to the prime minister proposing the Government consider allocating over 130,000 tons of rice to more than 8.6 million people at risk of hunger in 24 provinces and cities.

Each of these people affected by Covid-19 will receive 15 kilograms for one month, according to the ministry.

In HCMC, over 4.74 million people will benefit from the support of some 71,100 tons, while over 330,000 people in Can Tho City will receive over 5,000 tons and Dong Thap Province will allocate some 5,880 tons to 392,000 people.

Other localities which will receive the rice support are Danang, An Giang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Ben Tre, Binh Duong, Binh Dinh, Binh Thuan, Ca Mau, Daklak, Dak Nong, Dong Nai, Khanh Hoa, Kien Giang, Long An, Nghe An, Ninh Thuan, Tay Ninh, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, Phu Yen and Vinh Long.

After one month, if these people still face a shortage of food, the provinces and cities will report the situation to the ministries of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and Finance so that they can propose the Government weigh another support package.

Earlier on August 16, the prime minister issued a decision allocating over 4,100 tons of rice from the national reserve to Binh Phuoc, Bac Lieu and Soc Trang provinces to support affected residents there.

Accordingly, Soc Trang received the most at over 2,920 tons of rice, followed by Bac Lieu with some 637 tons and Binh Phuoc with some 560 tons of rice.
