HCMC – The prime minister has agreed to push back the completion date of the Metro Line No. 2, aka Ben Thanh-Tham Luong, from 2026 to the end of 2030, plus two more years to 2032 to fix any problems.

The Government leader signed Decision 388 on the adjustment of investment policy for the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro line, which connects Ben Thanh Market in District 1 and Tham Luong depot in District 12.

Under the revised plan, the project is rescheduled for completion and commissioning by the end of 2030.

The HCMC authorities should conduct paperwork for the adjustment and implement the project pursuant to the law to ensure cost-effectiveness and the project schedule.

In July 2022, the HCMC authorities wrote to the Ministry of Planning and Investment proposing the ministry seek the prime minister’s approval on the adjustment of the project schedule.

The long delays of the project are attributed to regulatory bottlenecks on land revocation and bidding, agreements on the arising work items and the unilateral termination of the contract by the consultant.

Metro Line No. 2, with nine underground and one elevated stations, and one depot, needs VND47,890.84 billion.
