HCMC – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has instructed ministries and agencies to proactively engage with the U.S. on tariff negotiations.

On April 29, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a meeting with ministries and agencies to review preparations for trade negotiations with the U.S., reported the Government news site (baochinhphu.vn.)

This was the sixth meeting presided over by the prime minister to implement directives from the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, and Party General Secretary To Lam regarding Vietnam’s response to the U.S. tariff policy.

After hearing reports and feedback, PM Chinh concluded the meeting by stating that Vietnamese authorities are actively addressing issues related to rules of origin, non-tariff measures, intellectual property, copyright, and administrative reform.

He directed ministries and agencies to proactively engage with the U.S. side and clearly explain the actions Vietnam is taking in response to their concerns.

The Government leader requested that negotiations be expedited to sign contracts with U.S. firms in May 2025 to import key goods, such as LNG, aircraft, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and agricultural products, with the aim of ensuring a sustainable trade balance.

Chinh emphasized that negotiations must be conducted with calmness, determination, and flexibility. He stressed the need to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and interests, uphold Vietnam’s international commitments, and ensure that progress in one area does not come at the expense of others.

Vietnamese agencies have been tasked with engaging the U.S. to work toward lowering tariffs on each other’s goods, as well as proposing that the U.S. soon recognize Vietnam as a market economy and lift restrictions on high-tech exports.

Vietnam will continue amending its legal framework to address U.S. concerns while safeguarding national sovereignty, honoring international commitments, and ensuring alignment with the laws of both countries.

The prime minister noted that the Government is preparing to submit revisions to several laws to the National Assembly, focusing on intellectual property, copyright protection, and administrative reform to better reflect current realities.
