HCMC – Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation left Hanoi this morning for Cebu in the Philippines to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit from May 7-8, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

PM Hung’s trip is being made at the invitation of Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr, Chair of ASEAN 2026.

It is his first overseas trip in his capacity as prime minister.

The 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings are the most important events of the Philippines’ 2026 ASEAN chairmanship. The summit carries special significance as ASEAN enters a new phase of development following a decade of ASEAN Community building from 2015 to 2025.

His participation reflects Vietnam’s longstanding foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation, and development, as well as its commitment to diversifying and multilateralising international relations in line with the spirit of the 14th National Party Congress. It also highlights ASEAN’s continued position as a key strategic priority in Vietnam’s foreign policy.
