HCMC – The Government has proposed reinstating a nuclear power development plan and developing offshore wind farms to meet the country’s rapidly growing electricity demand.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made the proposal during a Q&A session at the 15th National Assembly’s eighth sitting today, November 12.

The National Assembly issued a resolution in November 2016 suspending the nuclear power development plan in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan at the request of the Government. Among the reasons for the suspension were high cost and safety issues.

The Government aims to amend the Electricity Law to attract more investments in the energy sector, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Vietnam’s electricity demand is expected to rise sharply in the coming years, with an estimated growth rate of 12-13% in 2025 and even higher in subsequent years.

The PM emphasized the need to streamline regulations and remove obstacles to the development of power infrastructure projects. The Government will focus on building a smart and flexible grid system with advanced automation capabilities.

While acknowledging Vietnam’s overall economic stability and controlled inflation, PM Chinh highlighted challenges in public investment disbursement. Only 52.29% of public investment capital was disbursed between January and October, compared to 56.74% in the same period last year.

The disbursement of official development assistance (ODA) capital reached a mere 27.88%.

To address these issues, the Government has proposed solutions for 12 long-stalled projects, some of which have already demonstrated profitability.
