HCMC – The Quang Ninh Police Department has busted an illegal online gambling ring worth over VND10 trillion, which operated under the guise of a company and used violence to control gambling.

The company, Ngoc Anh Clean Water Company, ran illegal gambling, pawnbroking and loan shark activities, instead of selling clean water, Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Hoang Van Dinh, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Police Agency under the provincial Police Department, said on March 8.

The province’s police worked with the Department of Cybersecurity and High-Tech Crime Prevention under the Ministry of Public Security to crack down on the mafia-style gambling ring led by Nguyen Van Tu, aged 45, and Vu Ngoc Thanh, aged 46, who both live in Soc Son District in Hanoi City. The ring had 14 agents in Quang Ninh Province.

After searching for 11 suspected gambling locations in Dong Trieu and Quang Yen towns and Ba Che District in Quang Ninh Province and Soc Son and Me Linh districts in Hanoi City, the police arrested 19 people for their alleged involvement in the illegal gambling ring, impounding 10 vehicles and seizing over 30 phones, computers and ATM cards.

Two guns and 27 bullets were confiscated during the search, the local media reported.

The Quang Ninh police are further investigating the ring.
