HCMC – Soc Trang Province has proposed the central Government send medical workers and equipment to the Mekong Delta province to support it in the fight against Covid-19 as the risk of coronavirus transmission is high due to the major surge of workers returning from virus-hit provinces.

The province is in need of 10 doctors, 100 nurses, 50 ventilators, 500,000 rapid test kits, 100,000 biological products for PCR testing, 100,000 pieces of personal protective gear and one million doses of Covid vaccines, according to a dispatch sent by the provincial government to the Government’s special team today, October 7.

A large number of workers leaving HCMC, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Long An for Soc Trang Province have put immense pressure on the province’s Covid response, according to the provincial government.

Since early October, over 40,000 people have come back to Soc Trang Province, overwhelming the Mekong Delta province’s quarantine centers.

Most of them have yet to get vaccinated, thereby putting themselves and others at high risk of infection.

Earlier, the provincial Department of Health called on all medical workers, health experts, retired nurses and doctors to join the pandemic fight, the local media reported.

On October 6, Soc Trang reported 195 Covid infections, with 173 cases detected through screening tests. Since July 4, the province has confirmed over 1,680 Covid cases and 22 Covid fatalities.
