France is going into high gear to host the highly anticipated 2024 Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics, also known as Paris 2024. What distinguishes this edition from its predecessors is its unwavering commitment to sustainability. A sustainable return As France is gearing up for the Olympic stage a century after the Paris 1924 Summer Olympics, the focus shifts beyond athletic prowess to sustainability. The journey commenced with the inauguration of an athlete’s village on February 29, 2024, in northern Paris. This village, set to host 14,500 athletes during the Olympics starting on July 26, and another 9,000 during the subsequent Paralympics, will have a dual purpose. After the Games conclude, it will undergo transformation into an eco-friendly neighborhood, offering sustainable housing for 6,000 workers and residents. Paris 2024 is not solely about winning medals; it is about minimizing its carbon footprint. The organizers have set an ambitious target to halve the carbon emissions of the Games. This commitment reflects a significant step towards mitigating climate impact and preserving the environment, with the aim to achieve a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to previous editions.
