A surgery at FV Hospital has changed the life of P.A.B.T (12 years old, from Dong Nai Province), a boy who was born with a complex form of neurofibromatosis. The “miracle” was performed by Professor Doctor McKay McKinnon, a famous surgeon known for restoring the lives of patients with massive, once deemed inoperable tumors.
Nearly a decade of hopeless treatment and a miracle from heaven
At just 2 years old, T. was diagnosed with congenital neurofibromatosis – a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow along nerves. Initially, his right eye became abnormally enlarged; over time, the tumor rapidly spread into the eye socket and optic nerve, causing the eyelid to droop and eventually obscuring his sight.
At the same time, a giant tumor developed in his right buttock, causing severe pain and limiting his ability to move and play like other children.
For almost 10 years, T.’s parents took him to major hospitals across Vietnam, but every hospital turned them away, saying the tumors were too complex and that surgery could put the boy’s life at risk. One doctor advised, “If possible, try to seek treatment abroad.” With limited financial means, T.’s parents fell into despair, feeling as if their son’s future had come to an end.
In October 2023, through The Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund, T.’s medical records reached Professor Doctor McKay McKinnon – one of the world’s leading experts in complex tumor and deformities surgery.
By fortunate coincidence, Dr. McKinnon was scheduled to visit Vietnam that same month. He arranged for T.’s first surgery to be performed at FV Hospital. Although tumors were present in two areas, after assessing the boy’s condition and psychological state, the surgical team decided to prioritize the facial tumor first – aiming to relieve pressure on the eye socket and restore eyelid function and partial sight.
“Everything felt like a miracle from heaven. From the moment we sent the file to being called to FV Hospital – everything happened so quickly. Dr. McKinnon was gentle and dedicated, and everyone at FV was incredibly supportive,” T.’s mother, Mrs. O recalled with deep emotion.
A new life from a six–hour surgery
The greatest challenge in treating neurofibromatosis is the risk of recurrence and spreading. Two years after the initial surgery, the tumor regrew, expanding across the face and buttock – this time leaving T. in pain and barely able to move. When Dr. McKinnon returned to Vietnam in October 2025, FV Hospital and The Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund coordinated a second surgery – considered the most complex in T.’s entire treatment journey.
“The tumor in the back and buttock was massive, firmly attached to the spine and gluteal muscles. On the face, two tumors surrounded the eye and cheek, intertwined with delicate nerves. Our goal was not only to remove the entire tumor but also to preserve nerve function and maintain the best possible aesthetics,” Dr. McKinnon explained.

The surgery lasted over 6 hours. Dr. McKinnon and the FV team meticulously dissected every millimeter to remove the tumors, addressing both facial and back regions simultaneously before reconstructing tissue and skin for a natural appearance.
“When Dr. McKinnon stepped out of the operating room, he looked utterly exhausted. Yet instead of resting, he immediately came to tell us the good news himself. I couldn’t hold back my tears. I just pray that he stays healthy so he can continue helping other children,” T.’s mother shared, recalling the emotional moment outside the operating room.
On October 20, T. was discharged. The second surgery restored his facial appearance and mobility, giving him the chance to live a brighter life. Despite post-operative pain, he cheerfully said: “I’m really grateful to all the doctors. I want to recover soon so my friends can play with me again.”

Dr. McKinnon and his colleagues at FV Hospital were deeply impressed by T.’s rapid recovery and positive spirit. “A positive mindset always helps. Patients like T. need to hold on to hope and perseverance – because full recovery is absolutely possible,” Dr. McKinnon emphasized.
