HCMC – The Department for Roads of Vietnam has proposed adjusting traffic regulation on the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway due to concerns about a worrying increase in accidents on National Highway 1 passing through Quang Tri Province.

The department recently wrote to the Ministry of Transport reporting the results of traffic regulation on the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway over the past four months.

According to the department, since sleeper buses and heavy-duty trucks were banned on the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway in early April this year, vehicle traffic on the expressway has decreased to only 48% of its designed capacity. The traffic fall has led to a 56% drop in traffic accidents on the expressway over the same period last year.

However, traffic accidents have increased on National Highway 1 through Dong Ha in Quang Tri Province, as it has had to accommodate a substantial number of vehicles that are banned on the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway. Statistics show that accidents involving heavy trucks and sleeper buses account for one-fourth of the total number of accidents on the highway.

To address the situation, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Tri provinces have proposed multiple traffic diversion plans to ensure the effective operation of the expressway while reducing traffic accidents on National Highway 1.

The Department for Roads of Vietnam is now seeking approval from the Ministry of Transport to select a consultant to study and adjust traffic distribution to ensure traffic safety and enhance investment efficiency.
