Two killed as boat capsizes in Dong Nai

HCMC – A boat capsized in Da Ton Lake of Dong Nai Province yesterday, May 9, leaving two of the six people onboard dead, the local police confirmed this morning.

The deceased were identified as Nong Van D., aged 54, and Nong Van Ng., aged 44, residing in Bao Lam District of Lam Dong Province.

Tran Thanh Viet, a 40-year-old resident of Thanh Son Commune, Dinh Quan District, Dong Nai Province, hosted a drinking party with five of his relatives from the neighboring province of Lam Dong yesterday afternoon. After drinking, at around 15:00 the same day, Viet took the five on a boat to an island in Da Ton Lake to visit the Da Ton Cooperative office.

Some 100 meters away from the island, the boat overturned and sank due to strong winds, throwing six of them into the lake.

Local residents and the competent forces managed to save Viet and two others. However, Ly Van Noi, a 51-year-old resident of Lam Dong, was rescued but later confirmed dead.

D. and Ng. were missing until nearly 22:00, the day the rescuers discovered their bodies.

The Tan Phu District police have teamed up with the competent agencies to complete procedures to hand over the bodies to their families.

Da Ton Lake, which is located in Thanh Son Commune, Tan Phu District of Dong Nai Province, is a manmade reservoir established in 1986. It covers over 433 hectares of land, with a maximum depth of some 20 meters.
