Vietnam, South Korea pledge to deepen comprehensive strategic partnership

HCMC – Vietnam’s Party General Secretary To Lam and South Korea’s President Lee Jae-myung have issued a joint statement identifying key areas for more cooperation to deepen their ties, following talks on August 11 during Lam’s state visit to South Korea.

According to the joint statement, the two sides will strengthen political trust and promote substantive cooperation in diplomacy, defense, and security.

Economic, trade, investment, science, and technology ties will be elevated to a new height to match mutual needs and interests. Recognizing each other as leading economic partners, Vietnam and South Korea agreed to coordinate in addressing emerging challenges in the region and the world.

The two nations will accelerate the implementation of the Vietnam-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KVFTA), facilitating each other’s market access for goods and aiming to raise bilateral trade to US$150 billion by 2030. They also pledged to pursue long-term, strategic collaboration in supply chains and make full use of regional and multilateral economic cooperation frameworks.

South Korea proposed that Vietnam support Korean firms in participating in infrastructure projects in the country. Vietnam affirmed it will continue to foster a favorable investment environment to enable foreign businesses to invest stably and sustainably in Vietnam.

The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in renewable energy and improve energy efficiency, enhance information exchange on oil and gas exploration and production, and broaden comprehensive collaboration to advance digital transformation in the energy sector and strengthen cybersecurity.

The two countries will promote cooperation in labor, healthcare, and education, commensurate with the framework of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Both sides committed to working together on climate change response, agriculture, and infrastructure, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Moreover, they will promote exchanges, publicity, and communications, as well as organize events to deepen cooperation in culture, sports, tourism, media, and people-to-people exchanges, fostering stronger bonds and deeper mutual understanding between the two countries.

Vietnam and South Korea agreed to work closely together in international and regional forums, enhance coordination at international organizations and multilateral platforms, and participate in joint efforts to address both traditional and non-traditional security issues.

The two sides agreed that Party General Secretary To Lam’s state visit to South Korea, accompanied by his spouse, was a great success, marking an important milestone and opening a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
