Vietnam’s auto imports rocket in Jan

HCMC – Vietnam imported over 14,450 completely-built-up (CBU) cars worth US$314.5 million in January, skyrocketing 219% in volume and 149% in value year-on-year, according to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

The number of autos imported from Thailand amounted to nearly 6,700 worth US$125.5 million, making the neighboring country Vietnam’s largest car exporter last month.

Indonesia came second, with 6,180 cars valued at US$89.7 million shipped to Vietnam in the first month of the year. Vietnam imported 432 cars worth US$28.4 million from the United States, the local media reported.

China became Vietnam’s fourth biggest car supplier, with 328 cars exported to the latter.

The number of autos imported from the four major markets accounted for over 94% of Vietnam’s total car imports in January.

In 2022, Vietnam saw a record of nearly 508,550 cars sold, while more than 400,000 autos found buyers in 2020, which was then the best year of the automotive industry.
