HCMC – The 130-kilometer expressway from Can Tho City to Ca Mau City will be constructed during the 2025-2030 period, with a total investment of VND47 trillion funded from the State budget and other sources.

Speaking at a meeting on June 16 with the Can Tho government on the construction of the Can Tho-Ca Mau expressway project, Cuu Long Corporation for Investment Development and Project Management of Infrastructure said the expressway is designed to have four lanes and allow a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

The entire expressway will comprise 112 bridges and eight interchanges.

The Can Tho-Ca Mau Expressway will begin at the My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway in Vinh Long Province, running across the Can Tho 2 Bridge and in parallel with the National Highway 1, VnExpress news site reported.

The expressway will also pass Soc Trang and Bac Lieu provinces and is set to end at the Ca Mau City bypass.

Diep Bao Tuan, deputy general director of Cuu Long Corporation, said the construction of the Can Tho-Ca Mau Expressway is aimed at contributing to completing the traffic network of the Mekong Delta region and connecting with the HCMC-Trung Luong, Trung Luong-My Thuan and My Thuan-Can Tho expressways, which are under construction or yet to be built.

Besides this, when put into operation, the expressway is expected to ease the traffic pressure on some existing national highways, including 1A and Quan Lo-Phung Hiep and boost the Mekong Delta region’s socioeconomic development.

A representative of the Can Tho Management Board of Processing and Industrial Zones said the projected expressway will affect certain enterprises at the Hung Phu Industrial Zone. However, according to Director of the Can Tho Department of Construction Mai Nhu Toan, traffic infrastructure should be prioritized.

Vice Chairman of Can Tho City Truong Quang Hoai Nam lauded the feasibility of the expressway, as it will play a key role in linking the city and other provinces in the region.

Nam also asked the relevant departments and agencies to quickly complete a study report with solutions to connect with the surrounding area’s traffic system and demarcate land for the expressway.

According to the Cuu Long Corporation, Can Tho City should decide on the directions of the projected expressway as soon as possible so the firm can report the plan to the Ministry of Transport prior to October. Accordingly, the ministry will propose that the Government list the project in the medium-term investment plan for the 2021-2025 period.
