HCMC – The HCMC government has asked the investor of the first phase of a VND10 trillion flood tide control project in HCMC to accelerate work on the project and put it into operation early next year at the latest.
The municipal government’s office has issued a document on HCMC Vice Chairman Vo Van Hoan’s instruction on natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue, forest protection and forest fire prevention in 2021 and plans for 2022. Accordingly, the city asked investors of all anti-flooding projects in the city to speed up construction work.
The relevant departments and agencies were asked to cooperate to operate the city’s anti-flooding system in line with the operation of the Dau Tieng – Phuoc Hoa Irrigation Engineering Integrated Complex and Tri An Hydropower Company, located at the riverheads of the Saigon and Dong Nai Rivers, Tuoi Tre Online newspaper reported.
The city also ordered reviewing and maintaining weather forecast equipment to make early and accurate forecasts.
The above anti-flooding project comprises seven items, including six floodgates and a 7.8-kilometer embankment along the Saigon River. This is a key project of HCMC, contributing to completing a breakthrough program to control floods and respond to climate change.
The project is expected to help control flood tides for an area covering some 570 square kilometers on the right bank of the Saigon River and downtown, with some 6.5 million residents benefiting.
Work on the project started in mid-2016 and was initially planned to be completed in April 2018 but was delayed many times due to obstacles in site clearance and funding.
