HCMC – The nearly-US$2-billion Song Hau 1 thermo-power station was inaugurated today, July 16, in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang, reported the local media.
The 1,200-MW coal-fired plant in Mai Dam, Chau Thanh District, invested by Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN), started commercial power generation on May 6 this year and has since then supplied more than two billion kWh for the national grid.
Construction work began in 2015 on this major project, which is part of the National Power Planning No. VII.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh described the inauguration of the project as hugely significant as the facility would contribute significantly to guaranteeing energy security.
Le Van Tuan, general director of LILAMA, the engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) contractor of the project, said the Covid-19 pandemic had adverse impact on the construction progress of the project.
