HCMC – The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting today, October 6, reported high ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels in cities and provinces across the country, especially HCMC.
The UV radiation index was measured at 7.8 in Danang, 7.9 in Hanoi, 8 in Halong and Haiphong, 8.3 in Hue and 8.9 in HCMC. The figures were forecast to rise to 9 in HCMC and the provinces of Nha Trang, Can Tho and Ca Mau this weekend.
According to the agency, a UV index from three to six is considered average, from six to eight is high and from eight to 10 is very high, where people’s skin may get burned in 25 minutes if left unprotected.
Meanwhile, a level of 11 and higher is considered extreme, posing an increased risk of skin damage and eye burns if the skin is exposed to sunlight for 15 minutes.
UV light comes from the sun and is transmitted in waves at different wavelengths and frequencies, and people are exposed to it every day, experts of the national center said.
Prolonged exposure to the sun is harmful. They advised people to adopt preventive measures, such as wearing protective clothing and sunscreen when going out, to reduce the impact of UV rays on the body.
