HCMC – A 10-year-old boy who fell into the narrow shaft of a concrete pile at a construction site in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap has been confirmed dead, the local media reported today, January 4.
The boy, named Thai Ly Hao Nam, died after nearly 100 hours of unsuccessful attempts to free him from the 35-meter-long support pillar driven into the ground, said Doan Tan Buu, deputy chairman of the province.
“A team of medical and forensics experts and local authorities concluded that the victim had died. They are trying to recover his body for funeral,” he told the media.
The accident occurred on New Year’s Eve at a bridge construction site when Nam and three of his neighbors were looking for scrap metal.
The child shouted for help shortly after he fell into the shaft, which has a diameter of 25 centimeters and still remains underground.
