Former AIC chairwoman sentenced to 30 years in jail in absentia

HCMC – The Hanoi People’s Court has handed down a 30-year prison term in absentia to Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan, former chairwoman of Advanced International JSC (AIC) today, January 4, for her role in a bribery case that happened in the Dong Nai General Hospital project and AIC.

She was sentenced to 14 years in prison for violating bidding regulations that led to serious consequences, and 16 years for bribery, resulting in a combined prison term of 30 years, the highest sentence among 36 defendants.

The indictment said Nhan directed her subordinates to commit fraud in bidding activities to win 16 bidding packages for medical equipment supplies for the hospital development project, causing losses of VND152 billion for the State.

The court ordered Nhan, her subordinates, and AIC Company to compensate over VND152 billion for Dong Nai General Hospital over its loss in the case. Of which, Nhan was forced to pay over VND103 billion.

The sentences for the other 35 defendants were also given.

For the same charges as Nhan, Deputy General Director of AIC Tran Manh Ha was given a jail term of 25 years.

Whereabouts of both Nhan and Ha remain unknown.

Tran Dinh Thanh, former Party Secretary of Dong Nai, and Dinh Quoc Thai, former chairman of the province, were sentenced to 11 and nine years in prison for taking bribes, respectively.

Hoang Thi Thuy Nga, former deputy general director of AIC, will stay behind bars for 12 years for bidding irregularities, which caused serious consequences.

Besides Nhan and Ha, the six defendants on the run from the police got prison terms from 30 months to six years.

Other leaders and employees of AIC were sentenced to the lowest sentences from 30 months in prison to a maximum of four years in prison.

Leaders and employees of other companies working for AIC in the case received sentences of 30 months in prison or suspended ones of five years.
