HCMC – The HCMC Department of Natural Resources and Environment has been tasked with accelerating new investment projects and promoting the digital transformation of existing waste treatment facilities, reported the local media.

The implementation of new waste treatment projects and the digital transformation of existing waste treatment facilities is part of the city’s action plan to reduce methane gas emissions by 2030.

According to a report from the department, five domestic solid waste treatment facilities in the city have service supply contracts in place, including Vietstar JVC, Tam Sinh Nghia Development and Investment JVC, Vietnam Waste Solutions, Tasco JVC, and Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Company Limited.

Few years ago, the department collaborated with investors and urged them to implement digital transformation projects in domestic solid waste treatment, utilizing advanced technology capable of energy recovery during the treatment process. However, to date, only two projects, Vietstar and Tam Sinh Nghia, have received approval for investment policy.

If these two companies can complete the necessary legal procedures and commence work on the projects, along with equipment installation, by the end of this year, they are projected to be completed by 2025.

Meanwhile, new waste treatment projects seeking investment through public-private partnership are currently undergoing pre-feasibility study assessments.

The department acknowledges that the current rate of domestic solid waste treatment through recycling and power generation technology may not reach the targeted 80% by the end of 2025 as outlined in the development plan.

In addition to building new waste treatment facilities with modern technology, the city authorities are also urging districts and Thu Duc City to encourage waste collection units to change their means of transportation and promote waste classification at the source.
