CANTHO – Dong Thap Province has supplied 548,000 cubic meters of sand for the Can Tho-Ca Mau expressway project, thus ensuring that the construction of the expressway can be on schedule.
This decision has been made despite the province’s own sand needs for the ongoing Cao Lanh–An Huu expressway project.
The sand mine, situated along the Tien River, was officially handed over to the project’s construction contractor, Construction Corporation No. 1 JSC, on September 20.
The 110-kilometer Can Tho-Ca Mau expressway is a key component of the eastern North-South Expressway project. Its construction requires an estimated 18.46 million cubic meters of sand to build the roadbed.
However, the region has been grappling with a scarcity of sand and a shortage of viable alternatives.
Before this allocation, Dong Thap had already earmarked 371,000 cubic meters of sand from its existing mines to support the Can Tho–Ca Mau expressway project.
In a proactive endeavor to ensure a consistent supply of materials, Dong Thap is actively exploring new sand mines within its jurisdiction. This effort is aimed at securing 3.3 million cubic meters of sand in 2023, with a total target of seven million cubic meters for the entire expressway project.
Preparations are currently underway for the commencement of operations at four additional sand mines, boasting a combined capacity of around 2.8 million cubic meters, scheduled for October 2023.
These actions align with the directives of the Prime Minister, emphasizing Vietnam’s commitment to efficiently advance its infrastructure projects.
