HCMC – HCMC finds it extremely challenging to achieve its social housing target for the 2021-2025 period, with only 3.3% of the projects completed to date, well below the goal set by the Prime Minister.
During a meeting on December 8, Bui Xuan Cuong, vice chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee, said that out of the 91 planned projects, merely three have been completed, raising concerns about the possibility of failing meet the housing objective.
While HCMC achieved over 69% of its social housing target during the 2016-2020 period, the current progress indicates a significant slowdown, with only three out of 91 projects finished.
Cuong said that this rate falls far below the established target. The prime minister earlier approved a plan to construct at least one million social homes nationwide by 2030, with HCMC responsible for 69,700 units – a task that appears daunting given the current pace.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Van, head of the Urban Committee of the HCMC People’s Council, pointed out discrepancies in the reported completion figures.
While the city claimed to have finished three out of 91 projects, Van said that only one was a new project, with the other two projects carried forward from the 2016-2020 period. In reality, the progress during this phase translates to an addition of only 260 units, achieving a meager 1.31% of the set target.
