HCMC – The Vietnam Railway Authority (VRA) has proposed a VND19-trillion plan to upgrade the railway in the Hai Van Pass area and relocate Danang Station from 2026 to 2031.
The funding for the two projects would be sourced from the medium-term public investment plan for the 2026-2031 period, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The project aims to improve capacity for the railway section running from Vinh City to Nha Trang City, including addressing transportation bottlenecks facing the railway in the Hai Van Pass area.
According to VRA, the railway section through Hai Van Pass currently has numerous issues, such as sharp curves and steep gradients, which restrict train speed. In addition, the railway passing through the city center causes traffic congestion and affects the urban aesthetics.
As per the plan, VRA will invest in a new rail line through the Hai Van Pass tunnel and relocate the entire line to Danang outside the city center.
The railway planning until 2050 aims to relocate Danang station to the west while upgrading the existing railway to run parallel to the expressway, creating a corridor for future high-speed rail.
