HCMC – Vietnam and Ireland have issued a joint statement on bilateral cooperation enhancement during a three-day state visit to Ireland by Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam. The visit took place at the invitation of Ireland’s President Michael Higgins.

The 17-point joint statement outlines plans for bolstering ties between Vietnam and Ireland, focusing on education, agriculture and trade. The statement also emphasizes the importance of cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties.

During the trip, Vietnam’s top leader held talks with various high-level Irish officials, including Prime Minister Simon Harris in Dublin on October 3 (local time). Lam and Harris discussed collaborative efforts to strengthen cooperation and exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The Irish PM expressed condolences to Vietnamese people for the recent devastation caused by typhoon Yagi. He affirmed Ireland’s willingness to provide emergency assistance to Vietnam in difficult times.

Both leaders noted the importance of regular visits and exchanges of Vietnamese and Irish delegations. They agreed to maintain cooperation between the two foreign ministries through the bilateral consultation mechanism signed in February.

Vietnam and Ireland have established a strategic partnership in higher education. The two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding between the Vietnam National University in Hanoi and Irish universities during the visit.

Ireland has provided 325 scholarships to Vietnamese students since 2007.

Hanoi and Dublin pledged to deepen economic ties and strengthen cooperation on the global stage. The two countries reaffirmed commitments to fully implementing the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and discussed potential of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).

Both countries will foster coordination and mutual support at international platforms, particularly the United Nations and the ASEAN-EU framework.
