HCMC – On July 20, the Central Inspection Committee proposed that the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee dismiss former HCMC vice chairman Nguyen Huu Tin and former director of the HCMC Department of Natural Resources and Environment Dao Anh Kiet from the Party over serious violations of the law.
Tin was sentenced to seven years behind bars, while Kiet received a 6.5-year jail sentence in late December 2019 for their wrongdoings in a case related to the now-jailed business tycoon Phan Van Anh Vu, also known as Vu Nhom.
Tin and his accomplices, including Kiet, were involved in the illegal handover of a public land lot at No. 15 Thi Sach Street in District 1, HCMC, to one of Vu’s firms, Bac Nam 79 Construction JSC.
Tin, who was the municipal vice chairman in charge of construction and land management between 2011 and 2016, approved the deal to transfer the state-owned land lot to Bac Nam 79 Construction JSC without any bidding process in June 2015.
Tin later signed a decision allowing the company to construct a trading, service and apartment complex project, including an existing 18-story structure, on the land lot.
He then instructed the company to work with the city’s agencies to complete preparatory procedures for the project. As a result, the local government approved the project in May 2016.
Kiet and other accomplices sought instructions from Tin on handing over the land to the company. The company was not required to pay compensation for assets and architectural pieces on the land nor rent for the land, which was against prevailing regulations.
