HCMC – Vietnam’s National Assembly has passed a resolution designating Thua Thien-Hue Province as a centrally-administered city, a major step forward in the country’s urbanization agenda.

The resolution, passed with 95.62% approval from deputies (458 out of 461), will take effect on January 1, 2025. From this date, government bodies and organizations currently bearing the name “Thua Thien-Hue” will officially adopt “Hue” in their titles.

The new Hue City will encompass the entire area of Thua Thien-Hue Province, spanning 4,947 square kilometers and hosting a population of 1.24 million. Interim district and commune-level authorities will be appointed to ensure seamless governance until local elections in 2026.

The transition aims to balance urban development with cultural preservation, emphasizing the protection and promotion of Hue’s UNESCO-recognized heritage. While concerns have been raised about the region’s lower urbanization rate and income levels compared to national averages, the focus will be on enhancing long-term urban quality and sustainability.

Existing special policies for Thua Thien-Hue Province will remain in effect for Hue City until their expiration or further directives are issued.
