HCMC – The National Assembly (NA) has agreed to push back the completion date of the Long Thanh International Airport project’s phase one to December of 2026 to allow for an additional runway to be built.
The resolution, which all deputies of the NA present at its eighth sitting on November 30 voted for, allows the project to have two runways in the first phase, instead of one as originally planned.
The first phase was originally planned for completion in 2025 with one runway in the north of the airport. However, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAV) recommended developing two runways in phase one to increase flexibility and reducing operational risks.
The additional runway will be 400 meters north of the one under construction.
The total cost of the project is estimated at VND336.63 trillion. As of September, construction had been progressing rapidly, with the air traffic control tower topped out and substantial work completed on the passenger terminal and airfield facilities.
Covering 5,000 hectares in Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province, the airport is designed to meet the Category 4F standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Once completed, the airport will have a capacity of 100 million passengers and 25 million tons of cargo per year.
