Goods and service retail revenue rises 9.5% in January

HCMC – Total retail sales of goods and services in January reached an estimated VND573.3 trillion, a 9.5% increase over the same period last year, showed data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.

Retail sales contributed VND441.4 trillion, up by 8.6% year-on-year. Fuel sales saw the highest growth at 31.1%, followed by jewelry and precious metals (15.5%), automobiles (11.6%), and food and beverage (7.8%).

Revenue from accommodation and food services totaled VND67.3 trillion, a 14.8% increase. Among cities, Danang led with a 17.7% rise, followed by Hue (17.6%) and Hanoi (16.8%). HCMC and Binh Duong both recorded 15.6% growth, while Dong Nai (12.7%) and Can Tho (10.7%) also saw notable increases.

The tourism sector generated VND5.1 trillion in revenue, up by 17.3% year-on-year, fueled by strong holiday travel demand. The highest growth rates were seen in Khanh Hoa, Danang, HCMC, Can Tho, and Hanoi.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.98% from December and 3.63% compared to January 2024, while core inflation increased by 3.07%. Gold prices surged by 29% year-on-year, and the U.S. dollar appreciated 3.98% against the Vietnam dong.

Industrial production showed mixed results. Output fell by 9.2% from December but was 0.6% higher year-on-year. Manufacturing expanded by 1.6%, electricity production and distribution grew by 0.4%, and water supply and waste management increased by 9.2%, while mining output declined by 10.4%.

Industrial production grew in 47 provinces but declined in 16 others, with the industrial workforce increasing 4.5% from a year earlier.
