Doctors at Tu Du Hospital and Children’s Hospital 1 in HCMC have successfully conducted a fetal heart intervention for a 22-week pregnant woman from Singapore, saving a fetus diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect.

The fetus was diagnosed with aortic atresia at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore. As Singapore has not yet adopted fetal cardiac intervention techniques, the patient was referred to Vietnam for treatment.

After an initial failed attempt on May 22, the medical team restored blood flow through the aortic valve during a second procedure on May 28. Post-procedure scans confirmed improved circulation, and the family expressed deep relief.

Associate Professor Tang Chi Thuong, director of the HCMC Health Department, told the vov.vn that the case highlights Vietnam’s growing expertise in fetal medicine and supports HCMC’s goal of becoming a regional medical hub.

“One-hour’ thick noodle soup eatery closed in HCMC

A decades-old bánh canh (Vietnamese thick noodle soup) eatery in HCMC, known for selling out within an hour, closed permanently on May 29, leaving many customers disappointed.

The eatery has been run by Phi, 66, and her four sisters. Recently, a simple notice was posted outside announcing the closure due to the owners’ poor health.

Among the loyal customers was 63-year-old French violinist Noel Mckay, who has lived in Vietnam for over a year with his Vietnamese wife. Mckay returned to the shop on its final day with a bouquet to thank the owners. “The noodle soup here is the best!” the French customer told the Thanh Nien news site.

In its final days, the soup sold out in just 15 minutes, as customers lined up well before opening time. For many, the shop was more than a place to eat; it was a culinary landmark in HCMC, tied to lasting memories. As news of its closure spread, social media filled with heartfelt farewells to the beloved eatery.

At 9:10 p.m. on May 25, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (VMRCC) was informed that the Cong Thanh 07, a ship transporting coal from Quang Ninh Province to Quang Binh Province with 11 sailors onboard, was sunken at about six nautical miles east of Son Duong Port (Ha Tinh Province).

The VMRCC immediately mobilized the SAR 631, Vietnam’s most modern rescue ship, and seven other vessels to rescue the sunken ship. At 3:10 a.m. on May 26, a fishing boat from Quang Binh rescued a sailor who was drifted 17 nautical miles south southeast of the sinking position and was still alive. At 12 p.m. on the same day, SAR 631 discovered and rescued six alive sailors floating in the rough sea. Meanwhile, the remaining four sailors were rescued safely by the other rescue vessels.

According to tienphong.vn, SAR 631 is the most state-of-the-art rescue ship of the country. It was handed over to the VMRCC last year to carry out offshore rescue missions around the Paracel Islands and the Spratly Islands of Vietnam. The rescue vessel is 63 meters long and its capacity is up to 100 people.
