HCMC – Dong Thap Province has instructed relevant agencies to prepare additional site clearance for an overpass at the Dong Tam intersection, part of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project, and report funding sources and implementation progress by February 7.
According to the Dong Thap People’s Committee Office on February 5, the Department of Construction has been assigned to lead coordination with the Departments of Finance, Agriculture and Environment, Long Hung Commune and related units to study and give opinions on capital allocation and the timeline for additional land clearance for the overpass at the National Highway 1 intersection (Dong Tam intersection).
The move follows rising traffic congestion at the Dong Tam intersection after Rach Mieu 2 Bridge was put into operation on August 19, 2025. The Department of Construction reported that traffic volumes have increased sharply, causing frequent congestion, particularly during peak hours and weekends.
In recent months, temporary measures such as traffic diversion, public communication and adjustments to traffic signal cycles have been applied, but these have not resolved congestion. The department said the construction of an overpass at the intersection is the long-term solution.
The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project is scheduled to run until 2027 and currently has an estimated remaining capital balance of around VND400 billion. Dong Thap and its neighboring Vinh Long Province have proposed grade-separated interchanges at the Dong Tam intersection in Dong Thap and at the project’s endpoint on National Highway 60 in Vinh Long.
For the Dong Tam overpass alone, the preliminary investment is estimated at about VND248 billion. The Department of Construction is coordinating with the My Thuan Project Management Board and the Ministry of Construction to implement preparatory steps, with construction expected to start in 2026 and completion targeted for 2027.
