Hanoi fast-tracks green bus transition, adds 12 new routes from July

HCMC – Hanoi is accelerating its shift to cleaner public transport, targeting a fully green bus fleet in the city’s central core by July 1 while launching 12 new routes to meet rising urban travel demand.

The city’s Traffic Management and Operations Center has submitted a plan to adjust and expand bus routes to support the transition to cleaner vehicles under Directive No. 20 issued by the prime minister, the Hanoi Department of Construction was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency.

The plan is designed to meet green transition targets by increasing the share of electric and low-emission buses across Hanoi’s Beltways 1, 2 and 3.

Under the roadmap, all buses within Beltway 1 will shift to green energy by July 1 this year, followed by full conversion in Beltway 2 by January 2028, and in Beltway 3 from 2030.

In the first phase, starting July 1 this year, the city will launch 12 new bus routes, including Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG)-Thong Nhat Park; Gamuda urban area-Hao Nam; Tran Khanh Du-My Dinh Bus Station; Nam Thang Long-Yen So; Thanh Ha urban area-Hao Nam; Kim Ma-Ta Thanh Oai; My Dinh Bus Station-Long Bien; Hao Nam-Bac Thang Long Industrial Park; Thanh Ha urban area-Cau Giay; Nuoc Ngam Bus Station-Hanoi Railway Station; Vietnam Exhibition Center-Hanoi Railway Station; and Cau Giay-Thong Nhat Park.

In the second phase, starting January 1, 2028, the city will introduce six additional bus routes, including Phuc Loi-Cau Giay; Giap Bat Bus Station-Cau Giay; Long Bien-Nhon; West Lake Water Park-Nuoc Ngam Bus Station; Nam Thang Long-Yen Nghia Bus Station; and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (Facility 2)-Thong Nhat Park.

In the third phase, from 2030, no new routes are planned, as the network will have been established in earlier phases and the vehicle transition will be fully completed.
