HCMC – The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has requested the Ministry of Transport review the prefeasibility study for two more components of the Long Thanh International Airport project: the second runway and the ground leveling of the area designated for Terminal 3.

The second runway requires over VND3,455 billion, with ACV as the investor using its own capital. Meanwhile, the ground leveling for Terminal 3 will need around VND1,956 billion, which will be funded through public investment.

The second runway would be built in parallel with the first, which is 4,000 meters long. The project will also include a taxiway system, a signal light system, air traffic control equipment, and other necessary facilities to ensure efficient operations.

The designated area for ground leveling for the construction of Terminal 3 is approximately 181 hectares. Ground leveling is feared to affect flight safety due to aircraft’s exposure to dust.

According to an ACV representative, it is essential for airports to have additional runways to prevent total airport closure in case of aircraft incidents, runway maintenance, repair, or natural disaster.

Based on the operational plan dividing air traffic between Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat airports, Long Thanh is expected to handle over 80% of the total international passenger volume for both airports.
