HCMC – Australia’s rice company SunRice is weighing expanding its investment in Vietnam, the largest rice growing country in Southeast Asia, local media reported.

During a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 8, SunRice’s chief executive officer Paul Serra discussed plans for investment expansion in the Vietnamese market.

With a firm grip on about 90% of the Australian rice market, SunRice looks to bolster ties with Vietnamese partners in agriculture.

PM Chinh expressed interest in fostering greater agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and Australia, particularly in sustainable agriculture. He urged SunRice to expand investment, facilitate technology transfer, and support Vietnamese enterprises in participating deeper in the global production and supply chains.

Since 2022, SunRice has been collaborating with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research in a project for improving the quality of the rice supply chain in the Mekong Delta.

PM Chinh encouraged SunRice to explore investment opportunities beyond rice, suggesting ventures into other agricultural sectors such as fruits and aquaculture.
