HCMC – An 18-kilometer sea-crossing bridge linking Ca Mau and Hon Khoai Island got off the ground on August 19, and when it is in place, it would become Vietnam’s longest sea-crossing bridge and the third longest in Southeast Asia.
According to the news portal of Ca Mau Province, the road to Hon Khoai Island will be constructed to sea-crossing bridge standards, stretching around 18 kilometers with four lanes, a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and a total investment of over VND25.7 trillion.
The bridge will feature a main span of 17.3 kilometers, a 0.87-kilometer branch leading to the island, and a deck width of 16.5 meters.
The project is being executed by Army Corps 12 under the Ministry of National Defense, with completion targeted for the end of 2028.
The bridge will connect with the Ca Mau–Dat Mui Expressway, which stretches over 80 kilometers, costs nearly VND59 trillion, and is also scheduled for completion in 2028.
Pham Thanh Ngai, chairman of the Ca Mau People’s Committee, said the province, bordered by the sea on three sides, holds a strategic location in the heart of Southeast Asia.
The Hon Khoai Island cluster lies on the frontline near international shipping routes, offering natural advantages for deep-water port development. Covering around four square kilometers and located nearly 28 kilometers offshore, the island’s highest point reaches 318 meters. Currently, it remains a military zone with no civilian population.
