CJ Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ESG Activities in Vietnam in 2024

Must read

In 2024, CJ Group continued to strengthen its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development in Vietnam. Through practical and impactful programs in areas such as healthcare, education, agriculture, sports, and disaster relief, CJ has not only improved the quality of life for local communities but also contributed to the overall development of the country. Below are the notable activities of CJ Group in Vietnam in 2024.

Free Medical Program in Ninh Thuan

In January 2024, CJ Group collaborated with the Suwon Medical Volunteer Organization (Korea) to organize a free medical program for the residents of Tam Ngan 1 village, Ninh Son District, Ninh Thuan Province. The program took place from January 16th to 19th and attracted nearly 1,400 participants. The volunteer team, consisting of doctors, nurses, and volunteers, conducted medical exams, distributed medicines, provided health consultations, and held activities such as teaching Taekwondo and personal hygiene guidance for the local community. This initiative is part of CJ’s CSR strategy to enhance public health and improve living standards in remote areas.

Chili Raw Material Project in Ninh Thuan

The Chili Raw Material Project in Ninh Thuan was launched in 2014 with the aim of improving the lives of local people in the area. By 2017, the project had achieved significant milestones, such as improving the living environment in Tam Ngan village (Ninh Son District, Ninh Thuan) and increasing agricultural income through chili planting contracts.

In particular, the project strengthened the agricultural value chain in Ninh Thuan and connected it with CJ’s food business to maximize the effectiveness of the project by establishing the Tam Ngan agricultural processing factory, ensuring a stable market for the locally grown chili.

After the project’s completion in 2018, CJ continued to support the cooperative and expanded the chili powder market. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a reduction in the participation of local farmers in chili cultivation and the temporary closure of the factory, making it difficult for the cooperative and farmers to sustain their livelihoods. Despite these challenges, since 2022, CJ has provided emergency funding (over VND400 million) to repair the factory and encourage farmers to return to chili cultivation.

From mid-2023 onwards, CJ has supported the Tam Ngan Cooperative in replanting chili crops and addressing food safety requirements. As a result, Ninh Thuan chili powder has been back on the market since 2024. However, a limited participation of certain farming households continues to result in low output and a shortage of labor in cooperatives and processing factories.

To rebuild the project and ensure sustainable results, from July 2024 to June 2026, CJ Group and KOICA have committed to a total support of VND4.2 billion. Together with local authorities in Ninh Thuan, the project will focus on material support programs to expand farmer participation and increase agricultural production.

“Summer of Love” Charity Program in Ninh Son

From July 31st to August 1st, 2024, CJ Group organized the “Summer of Love” charity program in Ninh Son District, Ninh Thuan Province. This initiative aimed to improve the facilities and learning conditions for local students. CJ’s volunteer team renovated the school, donated gifts including beds, fans, school bags, toys, and playground equipment. This event not only enhanced the learning environment for students but also created a beneficial play space to encourage the spirit of learning and play for children in this disadvantaged area.

Disaster Relief Support for Northern Vietnam

In response to the severe damage caused by typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam in September 2024, CJ Group decided to allocate more than VND1.7 billion in disaster relief. This contribution included VND1.262 billion in cash, sent through the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, and VND500 million worth of goods (livestock feed and other essential supplies), which were delivered to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. This practical action by CJ aimed to alleviate the burden on communities severely affected by the disaster and help restore the livelihoods of those in the disaster-stricken areas.

National Youth Taekwondo Championship – CJ 2024

In 2024, CJ Group continued to sponsor the National Youth Taekwondo Championship – CJ, held in Tien Giang Province from August 15th to 22nd. The tournament attracted nearly 1,300 coaches, athletes, and staff from 44 units nationwide, with thousands of enthusiastic supporters in attendance. This annual event, which CJ has been sponsoring since 2019, aims to discover and nurture young athletic talent for Vietnam’s national team. This year’s tournament was also part of the Sports Week under the CJ K FESTA – the first Korean Cultural Festival held in Vietnam.

The event is not only an exciting sports competition but also an opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talents, compete, and potentially be selected for the national youth team to compete in the 2024 World Youth Taekwondo Championship in Korea. After four consecutive seasons, CJ has become a trusted partner of Vietnamese Taekwondo, fueling the passion of young athletes and supporting the development of sporting talent.

Scholarships for Students in Lam Dong

CJ Group also places a strong emphasis on supporting education in Vietnam, especially through its scholarship program for disadvantaged students in Lam Dong Province. Since 2013, CJ has regularly awarded scholarships each year, aiming to encourage academic spirit and provide financial support to help students overcome economic hardships and pursue their dreams. To date, over 1,200 students have received CJ scholarships, enabling them to continue their education and personal development.

CJ Short Film Project 2024: Nurturing Vietnam’s Film Talent

On May 8, 2024, at CGV Van Hanh (Ho Chi Minh City), the CJ Short Film Project 2024 was officially launched, attracting the participation of top directors, film producers, and hundreds of young film enthusiasts. The CJ Short Film Project 2024 continues its mission to discover and develop young talent in Vietnam’s film industry, with the theme “Golden Moment – Shine with Passion.” The CJ Cultural Fund offers a sponsorship of up to VND1.5 billion (VND300 million per project) for outstanding works, supporting young filmmakers to showcase their films at prestigious international film festivals.

This initiative not only creates opportunities for young talent to grow but also contributes to the enhancement of Vietnamese cinema. With the support of industry experts, CJ also provides assistance with equipment, post-production, and organizes specialized training in film production and directing. After four seasons, the CJ Short Film Project has helped many young directors achieve success at international film festivals, such as Pham Thien An, who won the Camera D’Or at Cannes Film Festival 2023, and Pham Ngoc Lan, who won Best Debut Film at the Berlin Film Festival 2024.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Through its CSR and ESG activities in 2024, CJ Group not only fulfills its social responsibility but also promotes sustainable development initiatives in Vietnam. From agriculture, education, and healthcare to sports and disaster relief, CJ continues to accompany the Vietnamese community in building a developing, equitable, and sustainable society.
