HCMC – The Covax Facility will allocate 9.2 million more doses of the Pfizer and Moderna Covid vaccines to Vietnam, a senior executive of the facility said yesterday.
Speaking at a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Paris on November 3, the Covax Facility’s Office Managing Director Aurelia Nguyen said that after the teleconference with the Vietnamese prime minister on September 20, the facility started to speed up the allocation of Covid vaccines to Vietnam.
The Covax Facility has decided to distribute 9.2 million Covid vaccine doses to the Southeast Asian country as soon as possible, said Aurelia Nguyen.
Nguyen affirmed that the Covax Facility would continue to support Vietnam in the fight against the pandemic by providing it with Covid vaccines and vaccination technique support.
At the meeting with the representative of the Covax Facility, as part of his three-day official visit to France, Vietnamese Prime Minister Chinh thanked the facility for its commitment to allocate 38.9 million Covid vaccine doses to Vietnam this year. To date, the country has received some 23 million doses.
Though Vietnam has basically brought the Covid pandemic under control, the country needs more vaccine doses to achieve herd immunity as soon as possible, especially for the vaccination of children.
As such, the Vietnamese Government leader asked the Covax Facility to continue allocating the remainder of the pledged Covid vaccine doses to Vietnam this month.
Vietnam also decided to contribute an additional US$500,000 to the Covax Facility, raising the country’s total donations to the facility to US$1 million, said the prime minister.
In another development, France will donate 970,000 more Covid vaccine doses to Vietnam through the Covax Facility and offer a direct bilateral donation of 400,000 to the country, French Prime Minister Jean Castex told a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh at the Matignon Palace yesterday (local time).
The new donations have raised France’s total Covid vaccine donation to Vietnam to over two million.
Earlier on August 12, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would present Vietnam with 670,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses, the local media reported.
