HCMC – As the country has recently seen a surge in fires and explosions, the HCMC government has proposed the firefighting force be equipped with modern equipment, such as helicopters, fireboats and robots.

Speaking at a national conference on fire prevention and fighting yesterday, Phan Van Mai, chairman of HCMC, said firefighters should have more fire engines as well.

Since August 1, 2017, there have been 3,500 fire and explosion incidents in HCMC. The first eight months of the year 2022 witnessed 122 such incidents, with two people killed and 12 injured.

HCMC currently has 17 firefighting teams, with 150 members.

In the course of development, Vietnam has had more high-rise buildings, commercial centers, economic zones, production facilities and karaoke bars. But public awareness of fire prevention remains woefully poor.
