HCMC – A 36-year-old female worker of the Kim Viet Footwear Co., Ltd in Thanh Hoa Province has become the fourth person to die after receiving the second Vero Cell Covid-19 vaccine dose, according to the Thanh Hoa Department of Health.

This morning, November 26, a department leader said she died after being put on an ECMO machine at the provincial General Hospital for over two days, the local media reported.

Eight other workers who developed side effects after being jabbed and are being treated at the Thanh Hoa General Hospital are stable. Nearly 60 others with milder symptoms who are being monitored at the Nong Cong District General Hospital are also stable.

All of these workers are women in their 20s and 30s. They were among 400 workers who were given the second Vero Cell shot on November 23.

Assigned by the Ministry of Health to come to Thanh Hoa to help treat the victims of the incident, Doctor Nguyen Van Chi, head of the emergency department of Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, and his team had coordinated with the Thanh Hoa General Hospital and the Department of Health to treat the patients. Six patients with the most serious symptoms have responded well to treatment and might recover in the upcoming days.

According to Chi, they developed anaphylaxis after the vaccination.

On November 18, Nong Cong District was allocated 53,000 Vero Cell doses. On November 23, the district administered the vaccine to 13,400 people who have received one Covid vaccine dose and 16,500 people aged between 18 and 49 who have yet to receive any Covid vaccine dose.

However, after administering some 10,000 doses, hundreds of female workers of the Kim Viet Footwear Co., Ltd developed side effects, including five diagnosed with anaphylaxis.

Two workers died in the morning of November 24 and another in the afternoon.

According to a consulting council, the cause of death of the workers was anaphylaxis after the Vero Cell vaccination. They said the vaccine distribution, transport and storage processes at the Thanh Hoa Center for Disease Control, the Nong Cong medical center and the vaccination site at the Kim Viet Footwear Co., Ltd were in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Health and the national immunization program.

The vaccination, health screening and post-vaccination health monitoring processes were also done in line with the regulations. No mistake has been detected from the processes,” said Trinh Huu Hung, director of the Thanh Hoa Department of Health.

The department has stopped using the Vero Cell vaccine batch involved in the incident.
