Gold, dollar edges up

HCMC – Domestic gold prices rose sharply on the morning of May 6, with SJC-branded gold bars increasing by up to VND2.5 million per tael from the previous session, while the U.S. dollar at commercial banks inched up slightly against the Vietnamese dong.

At the start of trading, Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) quoted SJC-branded gold bars at VND164.5 million per tael for buying and VND167.5 million per tael for selling, up VND2.5 million from the previous close.

ACB listed the metal at VND163 million for buying and VND166 million for selling, up VND500,000 per tael. Mi Hong quoted buying prices unchanged at VND162 million per tael and raised selling prices by VND500,000 to VND164 million. DOJI increased prices by VND2.5 million per tael to VND164.5 million for buying and VND167.5 million for selling.

Gold ring prices also moved higher. SJC raised gold ring prices by VND2.5 million per tael to VND161.5 million for buying and VND164.5 million for selling. Phu Quy listed gold rings at VND162.8 million for buying and VND165.8 million for selling, up VND800,000 per tael.

Globally, gold traded at around US$4,623 per ounce, up US$65 from the same time in the previous session.

Domestic silver prices also rose on the same morning. Phu Quy quoted silver pieces at VND2.84 million per tael for buying and VND2.92 million per tael for selling, up around 2.13% from the previous close. Ancarat listed silver at VND2.83 million for buying and VND2.92 million for selling, up VND46,000 and VND48,000, respectively. DOJI quoted silver at VND2.83 million per tael for buying and VND2.94 million for selling, up VND63,000 and VND65,000, respectively.

Globally, silver traded at around US$74.81 per ounce, up about 2.89% from the previous session.

On the same morning, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) set the central exchange rate at VND25,113 per U.S. dollar, up VND2 from the previous day.

At commercial banks, the U.S. dollar edged up. Vietcombank quoted the greenback at VND26,138 for buying and VND26,368 for selling, up VND2. ACB listed the dollar at VND26,140 for buying, down VND20, and VND26,368 for selling, up VND2 from the previous session.
