HCMC – The Government has sent out top leaders to oversee disaster relief efforts in the areas devastated by Typhoon Yagi, which killed nine people and injured 187 others as of 10 a.m. this morning, reported the local media.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh today, September 8, chaired an online meeting to assess the aftermath of Yagi, the third storm to hit the country this year, as well as relief efforts. After the meeting, he traveled to Quang Ninh Province and Haiphong City to inspect some of the typhoon-affected areas.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh was dispatched to coastal provinces in the Red River Delta, while Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc headed to the northern mountainous provinces. Deputy Prime Ministers Le Thanh Long and Bui Thanh Son were sent to other affected areas.

Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm that has pounded northern Vietnam in three decades, damaged 3,279 homes and submerged 121,500 hectares of rice and crops. It also destroyed 5,027 hectares of fruit trees and over 1,000 fish farming cages.

Yagi left a trail of destruction in Hanoi City after it had pounded the city for almost 12 hours, from 7 p.m. on September to 7 a.m. on September 8.

Initial data from Hanoi City showed that more than 17,000 trees were either damaged or uprooted, three persons were killed and 11 others were injured.

As the super typhoon was forecast to weaken this morning, several airports in northern Vietnam have resumed operations.
