HCMC – Several solutions will be tabled for discussion at the 20th meeting of the HCMC People’s Council to eliminate obstacles hampering the city’s economic growth, which started today, July 9.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the three-day meeting, Nguyen Thi Le, chairwoman of the municipal People’s Council, stated that the city will focus on adopting solutions for the post-Covid-19 period. The city will help its economy recover and prevent the Covid-19 infection.

Apart from setting socioeconomic targets for the second half of 2020, the city will deploy several projects, including steps for turning HCMC into a smart city and building and developing the eastern residential area into an innovation ecosystem.

To achieve good economic growth in the second half of the year, Le told the participating deputies to discuss and evaluate bottlenecks faced by the city and present solutions for the recovery of business and production activities and the tourism industry after the coronavirus pandemic has successfully been brought under control.

The city has promptly offered support policies to firms and residents to overcome the hardships triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, Le said.

The total budget collection amounted to an estimated VND163.2 trillion over the first half of the year, reaching 40.2% of the target, while its gross regional domestic product edged up by an estimated 2% year-on-year.

However, Le said that the pandemic has put a crimp on some sectors, enterprises and workers. The city welcomed a mere 1.3 million international tourists between January and June.

As such, it is necessary to elaborate on the development orientation and work out more effective and appropriate support policies, Le noted.
