HCMC – The local authority has contacted 15 different businesses to find jobs for some 2,500 workers about to be laid off by PouYuen Vietnam this month, according to the HCMC Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.
Some 15 businesses are prepared to offer around 3,200 similar jobs for them, Nguyen Van Lam, deputy director of the department, said at the press conference on socio-economic performance in the city on February 23.
The HCMC Employment Service Center held 120 job-matching sessions in the city and established a working team to support the laid-off employees in PouYuen Vietnam and other businesses in Long An and Tien Giang.
It is expected that manufacturers of wood products, textiles and leather will receive a stable number of new orders this June or July, Lam said.
PouYuen Vietnam, the Taiwan-invested footwear material manufacturer, is the city’s largest employer, with over 50,500 employees. However, it planned to lay off 3,000 employees at zones C and D at the end of this month due to sharp drops in new orders.
HCMC recorded that over 110,000 workers were laid off or had their work hours reduced last year.
