HCMC launches fund-raising campaign for typhoon Yagi victims

HCMC – A major campaign has been launched in HCMC to raise funds for those affected by typhoon Yagi and ensuing flooding and landslides.

The HCMC Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and the Mass Mobilization Board for the Typhoon Relief Fund of the city held a ceremony on the afternoon of September 12 to officially kick off the fund-raising campaign.

A total of 91 businesses, organizations and individuals have committed to donating more than VND58.2 billion to help the victims, with nearly VND6.3 billion of that amount in kind.

Saigon Times Group also contributed VND2.5 billion, which came from donations by the group, and its readers and business partners.

Present at the ceremony were Laos’ Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse, former Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, HCMC Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Van Nen, and other notable figures.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Phuoc Loc, deputy secretary of the HCMC Party Committee, extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the typhoon victims and expressed sincere gratitude to Party General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and other high-ranking Laotian officials for attending the event.

He said that HCMC transferred VND120 billion to the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front on September 10, providing direct financial aid of VND10 billion each to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committees of 10 affected provinces and cities.

Earlier, the HCMC Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee had called on all officials, civil servants, public employees, and members of the armed forces to contribute one day’s salary to support those impacted by the storm, flooding and landslides.

The committee also appealed to media agencies, businesses, organizations, groups, individuals, and overseas Vietnamese to join in helping the victims overcome their challenges.

As of 8 a.m. on September 12, the HCMC Mass Mobilization Board for Typhoon Relief Fund had received over VND4.74 billion from 1,131 organizations and individuals.
