HCMC – The HCMC police have stepped up preparations for issuing the new version of ID card in accordance with the 2023 Law on Identification, which will take effect on July 1, 2024.
The new ID card will have several new features. The “Place of Origin” field will be replaced by the “Place of Birth Registration” field and the “Place of Residence” field will be moved to the back of the card.
The Ministry of Public Security will be the ID card issuing agency, replacing the Police Department for Administrative Management of Social Order.
New ID cards will no longer feature identification information or fingerprints, and the QR code will be relocated to the back side.
Authorities will collect biometric information such as fingerprint mapping, retina scans, DNA and voice recording from individuals applying for new ID cards. For the time being, citizens can decline the collection of DNA and voice recording.
Existing citizen ID cards remain valid until expiry. Cards with expiry dates falling between January 15 and June 29 will be valid until June 30, 2024, just before the Law on Identification comes into force on July 1.
